President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned the creation of over 8,800 new Primary Healthcare Centers nationwide, along with the enhancement of existing tertiary institutions to better manage trauma, oncology, and infectious disease control.

This announcement was made on Saturday by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima during the inauguration of the Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa Trauma Centre in Sagamu, Ogun State.

During the event, the Vice President emphasized the need for greater involvement from the private sector in the ongoing health sector reforms and healthcare advancement throughout Nigeria.

He reiterated the Federal Government’s dedication to addressing significant gaps in the health sector through strategic collaborations and investments, while highlighting the essential role of the private sector, stating that “the government alone cannot bear this responsibility.”

Senator Shettima noted that the Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa Trauma Centre represents a crucial enhancement to the nation’s emergency care system and exemplifies the government’s commitment to preserving lives.

He disclosed that President Tinubu has approved a “comprehensive Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative,” which includes the establishment of over 8,800 new Primary Healthcare Centres and the upgrading of existing tertiary institutions to address trauma, oncology, and infectious disease management.

“In a country grappling with increasing urbanization, motorization, and industrial hazards, trauma care is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity,” VP Shettima remarked, characterizing the facility as “a lifeline and a testament to a nation that prioritizes care.”

He praised the initiative of the Adegunwa family, encouraging more philanthropists and corporate entities to “look beyond personal success and contribute to nation-building.”

Referring to the initiative as a prime example of private sector involvement in public health, Shettima stated, “This centre transcends a mere birthday gift; it is a gift to humanity. It serves as a lifeline—a refuge where the injured can seek healing.”
