Businessman and Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, has formally announced his intention to contest the November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State under the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Okonkwo said he will succeed the current governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, in the race to make Anambra State a beacon of excellence in good governance.
He made this known on Saturday at the inauguration of his provisional campaign council before a large crowd of supporters, party workers and grassroots mobilizers at his villa in Ire village, Ogidi, Idemili North LGA, Anambra State.
He said that with the provisional campaign council, the stage was set for him to lead the state in 2025.
In his speech, he laid out his vision for a prosperous, secure, and globally competitive Anambra, lamenting that despite the great potential of the state, it is hampered by insecurity, unemployment, poor governance, and economic stagnation.
He called for a new direction and urged Ndi Anambra to unite around a common vision of economic transformation, security, and good governance.
Okonkwo stressed his determination to tackle insecurity through enhanced community policing and modern security frameworks. He pledged to create a business-friendly environment that attracts investment, empowers entrepreneurs, and creates jobs. He also stressed the importance of education and youth empowerment, and promised to institutionalize the “Nkwado Ogalanya (Igba Boi), a model to equip youth with professional and entrepreneurial skills.
He said, “My agenda includes massive infrastructure renewal, improved health care, and modernization of agriculture to promote food security and wealth creation.”
Okonkwo denied claims that he was a newcomer to the APC, emphasizing that he was a founding member of the current All People’s Party.
Citing his significant contributions to Action Congress and later Action Congress of Nigeria, he insisted that his commitment to the party is unquestionable.
He said, “I am a genuine member of the APC party and my loyalty and involvement is undeniable. Zoning is not an essential element of Anambra politics, and the state’s agenda requires competence, not sectionalism.
Anambra State is in serious trouble, and more than ever, competence must take precedence over zoning.” Now is the time to choose the best candidate who can lead the state’s rescue and rebuilding.”
He described his candidacy as not just a political campaign, but a movement to reclaim Anambra State and give the people the leadership they deserve.
He called for a collective effort and urged his supporters to stand with him to chart a new course for the state, promising that “together, we will make Anambra a beacon of excellence and good governance.”
