It’s Fake News, Tinubu Didn’t Direct Obasa’s Reinstatement – Lagos lawmaker

Reports that President Bola Tinubu has allegedly instructed Lagos State legislators to reinstate ousted Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker are being described as “fake news” aimed at distracting newly elected Speaker Modisola Lasbat Meranda.
This follows a report by an online platform that went viral on Sunday, drawing a series of reactions from the general public.
According to the report, President Tinubu pressured Lagos State legislators to allow Obasa to return as Speaker three weeks after his dismissal.
President Tinubu reportedly told the lawmakers to allow Obasa’s reinstatement because the political cost to the Speaker may outweigh the benefits of punishing his excesses, which mainly stem from corruption and abuse of office.
A senior Lagos politician who attended a series of meetings over the weekend told online media, “The president has directed that preparations should begin for Obasa’s reinstatement.” ‘The president said Obasa would resign in short order.
Some lawmakers, however, said Obasa’s return would be difficult for those who participated in his dismissal, especially those who circulated copies of that earlier article.
‘Bringing him back would be like trying to placate a snake that has had its head cut off. Its venom would be super venomous,” they argued.
The Lagos House of Assembly has been a hot topic since January 13, when Speaker Obasa was removed and replaced by current Speaker ModisHola Lasbat Meranda. Speaker Obasa was removed by 32 of the 40 members of the House. They accused his leadership style of fraud, misappropriation of funds, violations of the public trust, and high-handedness. There have been several attempts by Obasa to return to power.
Meanwhile, one lawmaker, who wished to remain anonymous, responded to the report by saying, “Based on the fact that I have met with the president, governors, the GAC, past congressmen from the 1st to the 9th Congress, and many others, this is nothing more than fake news.
In addition, there have been numerous courtesy calls and endorsements since the week Modisola Lasbat Meranda was elected as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, further adding to the legitimacy and credibility of her selection.
The dissemination of this fake news has piqued the interest of many political observers, enthusiasts, and citizens, who are asking, “Is Obasa important enough to be protected from above, or is this just a media stunt to lose?”
Lagos lawmakers are firm supporters of the leadership of constitutionally elected Congressman Modisola Lasbat Meranda.
But an aide to Mr. Meranda, who declined to comment publicly and anonymously, said the new Speaker is focused on the job at hand and “will not be misled by cheap talk or mere speculation to create confusion over the leadership transition in Congress.”
