Yobe Announces Plan To Reintegrate Ex-Boko Haram Members After De-Radicalisation

The Yobe State Government has unveiled its intentions to reintegrate former Boko Haram members who have completed the De-radicalisation, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration program as part of Operation Safe Corridor.
Governor Mai Buni made this announcement on Thursday during a meeting in Damaturu, the state capital, with representatives from the OPSC, led by Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
Buni recognized the severe consequences of the 15-year insurgency, which has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, widespread destruction of property, and the displacement of numerous families.
He underscored the necessity of a non-kinetic strategy to tackle the underlying causes of the insurgency, acknowledging that not all individuals involved with Boko Haram did so voluntarily.
The governor assured that his administration is dedicated to adopting and implementing the recommendations from OPSC to achieve the intended goals.
Buni also expressed gratitude for President Bola Tinubu’s comprehensive approach to combating insurgency and major crimes in the northern region.
“We share the understanding that some individuals were forcibly recruited into the insurgency or subjected to indoctrination.
“With continued efforts, these individuals can repent, rehabilitate, and reintegrate into society as responsible citizens.
“The state government is committed to the reintegration of repentant insurgents, with 390 individuals scheduled to graduate from the DRR program between April 14 and 19, including 54 from Yobe.
“The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management will oversee the reintegration process.”
General Musa emphasized the critical role of community engagement in ensuring the success of the reintegration efforts, noting that de-radicalization is a continuous process that requires support at the community level.
He also called for the establishment of additional de-radicalization centers, vocational training facilities, and modern equipment to improve rehabilitation efforts.
“With your support, those who witness the positive transformations in the lives of former members will be encouraged to voluntarily surrender,” he stated.
