Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has commended the Finnish government for arresting the leader of the self-proclaimed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Simon Ekpa.

President Tinubu said he appreciated the Finnish government’s intervention in the Ekpa case when he received Finland’s ambassador to Nigeria, Sana Selin, at the presidential palace on Friday, January 24.

He said the Nigerian government is not prepared to tolerate acts of division and treason that threaten the unity of the nation. In a statement, Special Advisor to the President for Intelligence and Strategy Bayo Onanuga praised the “timely intervention” of the Finnish government.

“We must thank them for protecting the human rights of our country through the trial of Simon Ekpa. Nigeria is one. We have been through turbulent times and we do not want to encourage terrorism. I am a child born into activism, but I don’t want division. We need unity and cooperation to bring about development. Our watchword is stability and unity to move the country forward,” Tinubu stated.

Noting that his National Security Advisor had reported all the details of the incident, the President said he understood the tenets of democracy, morals, and the rule of law that protects the values of the people.

In response, the Finnish ambassador praised President Tinubu’s courageous reforms. He said, “Simon Ekpa has hampered bilateral relations. Today, cooperation between the two countries is going very well, with the National Security Advisor providing all the evidence,” the ambassador said.
