Ghana’s President-elect John Mahama paid a courtesy visit to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Palace in Abuja on Monday.

Mahama, who won the recent Ghanaian presidential election with 56% of the vote, was warmly received by President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

His victory was a political upset as he defeated Mahamudu Bawumia, the ruling party candidate with 41% of the vote and Ghana’s current vice president. Mahama’s victory ended eight years of leadership by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and President Nana Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo’s tenure was marked by some of Ghana’s worst economic challenges in decades, including an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout and debt default.

The courtesy visit was an opportunity for both West African leaders to discuss regional cooperation, bilateral relations, and shared challenges within the sub-region.
