Obasa Re-elected As Lagos Assembly Speaker As Meranda Resigns

A wave of resignations and reorganization swept through the crisis-affected Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, marked by the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, the first female Speaker in the state’s history.
Meranda, who serves the Apapa Constituency I, announced her resignation during the plenary session, after which she was promptly re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.
The lawmakers praised her leadership approach and her efforts in fostering harmony within the Lagos State House of Assembly. They also acknowledged her strength and humility in adhering to the rules and regulations of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Her resignation came in the wake of a reported meeting with several senior members of the APC in the state, aimed at addressing the leadership turmoil that has plagued the Assembly for the past seven weeks.
Following her departure, Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted Speaker representing Agege Constituency I, was re-elected after being nominated by Noheem Adams, a former Majority Leader representing Eti-Osa Constituency I.
Obasa subsequently took the oath of office as the new Speaker of the Assembly, seven weeks after his previous removal. He has been a member of the House since 2007 and first assumed the role of Speaker in June 2015 before his ousting in January 2025.
In a similar turn of events, Mojeed Fatai, the Deputy Speaker representing Ibeju-Lekki Constituency I, also announced his resignation from the deputy position, stating that it was in the best interest of the House. He was immediately re-elected as the Chief Whip of the Assembly.
Setonji David, the Chief Whip representing Badagry Constituency II, also resigned from his position, only to be re-elected as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House.
Additionally, Okanlawon Sanni, a member from Kosofe Constituency I, submitted his resignation as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House.
The leadership crisis within the Assembly escalated on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was removed from his position.
