NFF Condemns Racist Abuse Against Calvin Bassey, Saying It’s Unacceptable

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has denounced the online harassment directed at Calvin Bassey, the Fulham defender and Super Eagles international, following the club’s FA Cup victory over Manchester United.
Bassey netted the first goal in Fulham’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United during the fifth round of the FA Cup, with Fulham ultimately advancing to the quarter-finals after a 4-3 triumph in the penalty shootout.
However, the defender faced racist and homophobic remarks from online users in the aftermath of the win, which added to the woes of a struggling Manchester United team.
In a statement released on X, the NFF characterized the racial and homophobic abuse as intolerable. The governing body expressed its solidarity with the 25-year-old in the ongoing battle against racism in both sports and society.
“The NFF firmly opposes all forms of discrimination, including racial abuse, and fully supports Calvin Bassey in confronting these unacceptable actions,” the statement indicated.
“We are dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful atmosphere for all players, both on and off the pitch.
“Calvin has our steadfast support, and together, we will persist in the fight against racism in football and society.”
Earlier, Fulham also condemned the “abhorrent” online abuse directed at the 25-year-old defender.
Bassey joins a growing list of English Premier League (EPL) players who have recently experienced online abuse, alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure, Joe Willock, and Kyle Walker.
