The withheld salaries of striking non-teaching staff in federal varsities including Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have been released.

This was disclosed by the Federal Government through Bawa Mokwa, the director of press at the office of the accountant-general of the federation (OSGF).

Speaking with TheCable on Saturday, Mokwa said the disbursement covers the benefits payable to retirees under the contributory pension scheme of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners.

Didactic Information Hut recalls that on October 28, non-teaching staff unions in federal universities began an indefinite nationwide strike over withheld salaries from 2022.

Mokwa who said the payment of withheld salaries has commenced and non-academic staff of federal universities have confirmed receipt also added that the federal government is committed to the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees.

The recent strike followed the non-inclusion of non-academic staff in the approved payment of withheld salaries during the 2022 strike under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, which was in October 2023, approved for payment by President Bola Tinubu but for public university teaching staff.

SSANU and NASU had accused the Tinubu government of unfair treatment and discrimination and thereafter embarked on a pre-strike protest to evoke a federal response on the unpaid salaries. But subsequent negotiations have shown no success until this confirmed payment.
