Peter Nwachukwu, the spouse of the late gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Federal Capital Territory High Court located in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme announced the verdict on Monday after rejecting Nwachukwu’s no-case submission. The court found him guilty of culpable homicide related to the death of his wife on April 8, 2022. Nwachukwu was arraigned on June 3, 2022, facing a total of 23 charges brought forth by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, which included culpable homicide, spousal battery, child cruelty, and criminal intimidation.

During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of the deceased’s children, and submitted 25 pieces of evidence. The defendant provided his testimony along with four additional witnesses and four exhibits.

In her ruling, Justice Nwosu-Iheme determined that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Despite appeals for leniency from Nwachukwu’s attorney, Reginald Nwali, the court sentenced him to death by hanging on Count 1.

He also received additional prison terms ranging from six months to three years for various other charges and was fined a total of N700,000. The prosecution was represented by Mrs. Aderonke Imana.

Osinachi passed away at the age of 42 on April 8, 2022, gaining fame in 2017 through her collaboration with Prospa Ochimana on the gospel hit song, Ekwueme.

Following her death, numerous colleagues accused her husband of inflicting domestic violence that contributed to her demise.
