Hon. Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives who was jailed for five years over bribery has regained freedom after serving his term in prison.

Didactic Information Hut recalls that Hon Lawan, who was the Chairman of the House of Representatives committee that investigated the Nigerian government’s fuel subsidies ended up receiving bribe to the sum of $500,000 from Business tycoon, Femi Otedola through his firm Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, which was among the list of oil companies allegedly involved in fuel subsidy fraud.

The $500,000 bribe was received by Lawan from Otedola in a sting operation involving the State Security Service (SSS).

As a result of the bribery allegation, Justice Angela Otaluka of the FCT High Court on 22/06/2021, found him guilty on three counts of bribery and corruption, and subsequently sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment.

The verdict was later affirmed by the Appeal Court but reduced to 5 years.

The attempt by Hon Lawan to quash his sentence in January 2024 also failed as the Supreme Court affirmed the five-year jail term.

In a statement, He personally signed on Tuesday, Hon Lewan wrote;
