The federal government, through the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, says Governors lack the constitutional authority to suspend or remove local government Chairmen from office.

Fagbemi disclosed this while speaking to newsmen recently when asked questions about the recent actions of the Edo governor, Monday Okpebholo, who suspended local government chairmen in the state.

Didaction Information Hut recalls that the Edo State House of Assembly relying on a petition by Gov Okpebholo had suspended all the local council Chairmen in the state for alleged misappropriation of public funds at their various LGAs.

This action had since elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians with many Lawyers describing the Governor’s action as unconstitional, which has also been supported by the AGF.

Recall that a recent judment by the Supreme Court had buttressed the autonomy of local councils in Nigeria.
