Tomiko Itooka, known as the world’s oldest person has died at the age of 116.
She was born on May 23, 1908 and was the world’s oldest person known to be alive, after Maria Branyas, who passed away on August 19, 2024.
Itooka became the oldest living person in Japan after Fusa Tatsumi passed away on December 12, 2023.
She married Kenji in 1928 and managed his textile factory office during World War II.
And after her husband’s death in 1979, she lived alone.
In 1989, however, she moved in with her two daughters.
Although dependent on a wheelchair, she was still able to move independently at the age of 116.
Her death on December 29, 2024, was reported Saturday by the Japanese public television station NHK.
They said she died at a nursing home in Ashiya, southern Hyogo Prefecture.
