The 2024 U.S. presidential election is taking place today, November 5, 2024. This election features significant candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as potential third-party candidates.

Democratic Candidate: Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris is the Democratic candidate for president. She has a notable background as the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead the ticket of a major political party. Harris’s political career began in California, where she served as the San Francisco district attorney and later as California’s attorney general. She was elected to the U.S. Senate before becoming Vice President under Joe Biden in 2020. After Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her on July 21, she announced her candidacy for the presidency.

Harris’s running mate is Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota since 2019. Walz has experience in education as a high school geography teacher and has served in the Army National Guard before entering politics.

Republican Candidate: Donald Trump

On the Republican side, former President Donald Trump is seeking to reclaim the presidency, aiming to become only the second commander-in-chief to serve nonconsecutive terms. Trump has a background in real estate development and gained fame as a reality television star before his successful presidential campaign in 2016. His running mate is JD Vance, a U.S. Senator from Ohio who previously authored “Hillbilly Elegy” and has experience in venture capitalism and military service.

Election Day Activities

As of today, more than 77 million people have already voted either early or by mail, indicating high voter engagement ahead of Election Day. Polling places across various states are set to close at different times starting at 6 p.m. ET.

Both candidates have been actively campaigning up until Election Day; for instance, Trump held rallies in key states such as North Carolina and Pennsylvania, while Harris campaigned vigorously across Pennsylvania with significant events planned.

Foreign Influence Concerns

U.S. intelligence agencies have warned about increased foreign influence efforts aimed at undermining confidence in the electoral process, particularly highlighting Russian activities intended to create division among voters.

Today’s election will determine whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will lead the country for the next four years amidst a backdrop of heightened political tension and foreign interference concerns.
