The Super Eagles of Nigeria have returned home from Libya after a terrible treatment by the Libyan Football Federation. Didactic Information Hut recalls that players and officials of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team were held hostage by Libyan authorities upon their arrival in the country ahead of Tuesday’s 2025 AFCON qualifying Group D clash with the Mediterranean Knights.

The Nigerian Team was stranded for over 20 hours without food or water and completely shut out of the world. This resulted in an outrage that led to a reaction from the Confederation of African Football, CAF.

Nigeria flew into Libya on Sunday afternoon, but instead of the Benghazi airport, which was their original destination, they were diverted to the Al Abraq airport, more than 200 kilometers and 3.5 hours away by car from the planned camp site.

According to the report, the Nigerian team was stranded after Libyan authorities suddenly refused to supply jet fuel to Value Jet, the official carrier of the Super Eagles.

However, the Libyan Football Federation denied the allegations of maltreatment and in a statement countered the allegations by saying that they had the same unpalatable experience they had visited Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Libyan Football Federation has condemned Nigeria’s decision to withdraw from the scheduled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, threatening legal action to protect the interests of the national team.

The Super Eagles were stranded for more than 13 hours at Al Abak airport on Sunday due to an unexpected detour, and citing safety concerns, Nigeria withdrew from the match originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 15.

In a statement carried by the Libyan Observer, the LFF blamed the Nigerian Football Federation for not cooperating in organizing the match and for causing the disruption.

The statement read, “The Libyan Football Federation condemns the measures taken by the Nigerian Football Federation by refusing to play the Libya-Nigeria match in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, stressing that it will take all legal measures to preserve the interests of the Libyan national football team.”

The LFF also said that the Nigerian Federation was inept in both the first and return legs, saying that it was not comparable to what the Libyan team experienced in the first leg.

“The Libyan Federation attaches some inhumane footage that did not prevent the Libyan mission from playing the Nigeria-Libya match last Friday in Nigeria, out of cooperation with the Confederation of African Football.

“The Libyan Football Federation clarifies that its Nigerian counterpart did not cooperate with it in any way, whether regarding the first or second leg match, noting that the events beyond our control do not equal a small part of what the Libyan national team was exposed to in the first leg match,” it said.
