A bill creating a special armed unit of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and containing other provisions to better manage the FRSC has been sent to its second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Abiodun Derin Adesida and Rep. Oleide Lateef Muhammed, would amend the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act of 2007 to provide for the establishment of the FRSC Special Armed Corps.

It also seeks to ensure that employees in the rank of deputy commander of the FRSC enjoy the benefits attached to the rank, including retirement benefits, and to give the FRSC the authority to have sole responsibility for road traffic administration and safety management, prevention and minimization of road traffic accidents on public roads, supervision of public road users, and traffic regulation.

The bill also seeks to give the FRSC the authority to remove obstacles on public roads and to educate drivers, motorists, and other members of the public on the proper use of public roads.

The bill was unanimously supported after a voice vote to pass the second reading.

Similarly, the House of Representatives adopted a motion submitted by Rep. Garba Ibrahim Muhammad at its plenary session on Thursday.

The motion called on the FRSC to incorporate technology-assisted enforcement, such as vehicle local systems, automated traffic enforcement systems, advanced analytics, and data platforms.

It also asked the FRSC to evaluate the effectiveness of its enforcement strategies to see if the technologically-assisted methods reduced traffic violations and improved safety.
