Niger Tanker Explosion Claims 77 Lives

A tanker exploded in Dikko Junction, Gurara, Niger State, claiming 77 lives. The tragic event, which occurred on Saturday, has left the community in mourning and raised concerns about security measures in the region.

Abdullahi Baba Arah, director of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the death toll in a telephone interview with Channels Television.

According to Director Baba Arah, 25 injured people were rushed to Suleja, Ouse, and nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

In response to the incident, the Niger State government has ordered that vehicles from the Maje axis be prohibited from passing through the Dikko Bridge.

Governor Umaru Bago gave this directive when he inspected the site of the explosion near Dikko Junction, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.

The governor criticized the recklessness of some drivers and said they should go under the bridge and make a proper U-turn.

The governor ordered the Sector Commander of the Federal Highway Safety Corps to establish a detachment in the area to ensure implementation of the directive and asked for cooperation from the relevant transport unions.

Governor Bago said the tanker explosion was deplorable and thanked God that the tragic accident did not extend to the adjacent communities, and urged the federal government to expedite the completion of the Minna-Suleja road.

The governor thanked the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, the fire service, and other agencies that contributed to the evacuation of the victims.

The governor said he would redeploy doctors from the Minna hospital to treat the injured who are being treated at the Suleja General Hospital.
