The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) announced on Friday the discovery of a significant operational hub engaged in the distribution of expired and counterfeit medications located in Umumeje village, within the Osisioma Ngwa region of Abia State.
In a statement released on X, NAFDAC indicated that this illicit operation was conducted from several buildings situated in proximity to the Ariaria International Market.
The agency reported that expired pharmaceuticals were being repackaged and revalidated for resale, thereby presenting a serious health hazard to consumers.
The confiscated items included expired potassium chloride, allergy treatments, immune boosters, and cholesterol medications, as detailed in the statement.
Additionally, the statement noted that machinery used for rebranding and altering expiration dates was found at the site. Efforts to contact the main suspect were unsuccessful, as he displayed indifference towards his apprehended associates.
The operation resulted in the arrest of multiple individuals linked to the illegal activities, although the primary suspect remains at large.
NAFDAC emphasized that this operation, carried out in conjunction with security forces, is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing initiative to combat the distribution of counterfeit drugs within the nation.
Furthermore, the agency reiterated its dedication to eliminating the spread of substandard and counterfeit medications in Nigeria, announcing that it is currently reviewing its regulations to implement stricter penalties for individuals and organizations involved in the manufacture and distribution of hazardous pharmaceutical products.
