Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, met with Afe Babalola, SAN, a prominent Nigerian lawyer, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Obi had begged Babalola to take into account the “situation” of Dele Farotimi, a human rights attorney, who is currently incarcerated in Ekiti.
Since he asked the Nigerian police to arrest Farotimi, the legal eminence has been the target of harsh criticism. Nigerians both locally and abroad are already planning a large-scale demonstration to pressure the nonagenarian to cease his alleged abuse of power.

Obi, who traveled to Ekiti State from Lagos on Monday, reportedly had “indepth discussions” with Babalola about Farotimi’s case. However, sources who attended the meeting attested that the former Labour Party candidate instead pleaded with the eminent lawyer.

Farotimi appeared in court on Monday after Afe Babalola SAN filed charges against him under the 2015 Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act.

“Today, Mr. @PeterObi travelled from Lagos to Ekiti State, dedicating the entire day to meaningful engagements. He visited Aare Afe Babalola at his office within the Afe Babalola University, where they had in-depth discussions on critical issues, including the situation of activists and lawyer @DeleFarotimi,” a social media user posted.

“Following this, Mr. @PeterObi proceeded to the prison facility where @DeleFarotimi is being held. In a private meeting, he expressed solidarity and engaged in a candid exchange aimed at addressing the prevailing challenges. – DrMo”

Human rights Lawyer Farotimi was granted N50 million bail by the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Monday. The police had charged him with cybercrime.

On Monday, December 9, 2024, Justice Babs O. Kuewumi presided over the court and decided that Farotimi could be released on bail with a N50 million surety and a guarantor who owned a landed property of comparable value.
The Inspector-General of Police filed the case, which has suit number FHC/AD/CR/104/2024, alleging that Farotimi was involved in cybercrime.

But in order to allow for additional proceedings, Justice Kuewumi postponed the case until January 29, 2025.

Also on Friday last week, the Nigerian police filed fresh charges against Farotimi, before the Federal High Court In Ado-Ekiti, for alleged cybercrime.
