The Edo State Governor has signed into law the Secret Cults and Similar Activities Prohibition Bill of 2025, which repeals the Edo State Secret Cults Prohibition Act of 2018.

The new law will take effect on January 24, 2025.

On Thursday, Governor Fred Itua, Chief Spokesperson for the Governor, made this known in a statement, saying that the new law includes harsher penalties for those involved in cult-related crimes.

He said that those who commit murder for cult-related activities will face the death penalty, and those who financially or materially sponsor crimes will face up to 21 years in prison if convicted.

Those who harbor cult members or allow their property to be used for cult activities will be imprisoned for 10 years and their property will be demolished, according to the statement.

The new law provides for 21 years’ imprisonment for individuals who financially or materially support a cult; 10 years’ imprisonment and destruction of property for those who harbor cultists or allow their property to be used for cult-related activities; and 21 years’ imprisonment for cult members involved in assault, injury, or destruction of property, death penalty for those involved in murder in furtherance of cult activities,” Itur said.

These measures are not intended to intimidate law-abiding citizens, but rather serve as a strong deterrent to those who choose to endanger the peace and security of Edo State.”

Itua said the move shows Okpeboro’s commitment to restoring peace, security and order in Edo State.

He said, “This law is not just about punishment, but about protecting lives and safeguarding the future of Edo State.

Cult activities have robbed many youth of their potential and turned them into instruments of violence instead of contributing to society.

With this law, the people of Edo State will take back Edo State from the hands of criminals and allow families, businesses, and communities to thrive without fear.

The demolition and confiscation of property associated with cult activity is a deliberate move to ensure that crime goes unpunished.”

Those who aid and abet cults no longer have a place to hide in Edo State. The government is sending a clear message: Edo State is for law-abiding citizens, not criminals.
