Taraba University ASUU Ends One Month Strike

The Taraba State University (TSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its ongoing strike after only one month.

The union launched the strike on December 5, 2024 over the partial implementation of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and Memorandums of Action (MoAs) agreed between the Taraba State Government and the union since 2014.

The union listed the main issues in dispute, which it said included university funding, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), staff pensions and gratuities, salary backlogs, Governing Council composition, and minimum wage adjustments. He stated that the government, through the Governing Council, has committed to strengthen the university’s finances in line with Taraba Law No. 4 of 2008; the ASU Taraba Chapter also mentioned the Earned Academic Allowances (EAA): 10% of the cumulative total was initially paid out.

Thereafter, starting in February 2025, 5 percent of the cumulative amount will be paid monthly until the entire outstanding amount is paid. He added that the government has approved the implementation of a national defined pension plan, with specific provisions for prompt and efficient benefits. ‘Salaries in arrears Composition of the University Governing Council: Constitution of the University Governing Council: Adjust the number of members to meet statutory requirements.

The government committed to timely payment of salaries, and implemented wages and associated adjustments. With the above agreement in place and with the approval of the ASU National Committee, the ASU-TSU chapter will suspend the strike immediately.
