The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has confirmed that it has successfully met the March 28, 2025 deadline for submitting an expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

For Nigeria to initiate a formal bid, it requires the support of the national government.

Previously, Nigeria lost its bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow.

In a statement from NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya, it was highlighted that Nigeria’s proposal for the 2030 Games in the capital city of Abuja represents a significant opportunity to demonstrate its development, improve its international reputation, and revitalize its sports culture.

The last time Nigeria hosted a major multi-sport event was in 2003, when it held the African Games in Abuja.

According to the NOC statement, “This experience will serve as a strong foundation for Nigeria to host again, demonstrating its capability in managing the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development necessary for such events.”

Furthermore, it would create a compelling narrative regarding the nation’s progress and preparedness.

The upcoming Commonwealth Games are set to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to March 29, 2026.

Initially, the Australian state of Victoria was slated to host the event, but the local government withdrew due to escalating costs.
