The 2025 edition of the annual 42km Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has once again seen a strong performance from East African athletes, particularly those from Kenya and Ethiopia.

Kenya’s Edwin Kibet claimed victory in the men’s category on Saturday, finishing with a time of 2:14:06 and securing the $50,000 prize.

Kibet had previously placed third in the last year’s marathon, where his fellow Kenyan Bernard Sang took first place with a time of 2:16:49, followed by another compatriot, Cheprot, in second.

This marks Kibet’s second triumph in this event, having previously won in the 2023 edition.

In the women’s division, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa achieved her first victory in the competition, completing the race in 2:37:04.

Nyango Gyang Boyi made history as the first Nigerian to finish, securing a position within the top 10.

Among the Nigerian participants, Gyang Boyi finished in 8th place with a time of 2:25:41.58, earning a prize of $4,000. Additionally, as the first Nigerian finisher, he received the N2 million top prize in the Nigerian category.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also participated in this year’s marathon.

The 42km race commenced at Western Avenue, in front of the National Stadium Surulere, and concluded at Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.

This year’s Access Bank Lagos City Marathon attracted thousands of runners vying for the top honors.

The annual event was awarded a gold label by World Athletics in 2023, a significant achievement less than eight years after its inaugural edition.
