There is currently a massive protest against the local government election scheduled to take place in all 23 local government areas in Rivers State on 5th October, 2024.
Didactic Information Hut reports that the protest is organised by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led by its State Chairman, Chukwuemeka Aaron and Mr. Tony Okocha, who leads the caretaker committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State. Both Aaron and Okocha are loyal to the FCT Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike.
The protest which started from the PDP Secretariat along the Aba Road in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has many loyalists and supporters of the FCT Minister both in the factions of the PDP and the APC loyal to Him.

Didactic Information Hut gathered that the Protesters are insisting that the local council elections must not hold in obedience to the judgment of the Federal High Court which favoured them against that of the Rivers State High Court which Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, and the Rivers State Government led by Governor, Sim Fubara are relying on to conduct the election.
On Wednesday, Gov Fubara in a state broadcast had reiterated the need for the local council election to hold this Saturday. The Governor in the broadcast also declared Thursday and Friday as public holidays and restricted human and vehicular movements from Friday evening to Saturday.
